Lisbon, 09 June 2019 (Lusa) – Portugal was chosen for the third consecutive year as the Best European Tourist Destination by the World Travel Awards, in a ceremony held on Saturday night in Madeira.
In a statement sent by the Cabinet of the Deputy Minister and Economy, “this distinction was first attributed to the country in 2017, renewed in 2018 and again awarded in 2019”, which consolidates Portugal’s international recognition as a tourist destination and shows how the country is “in the top of the preferences of international tourists”.
In addition to Portugal, Austria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey were named for this prize, the report said.
In total, Portugal received 39 prizes (three more than in 2018).
In addition to the Best European Destination Prize, Lisbon was awarded the Best Destination for City Break and Best Cruise Port, Madeira was voted Best Insular Destination, Passadiços do Paiva won the Best Tourism Development Project award and Dark Sky Alqueva received the European Prize for Responsible Tourism.
Turismo de Portugal, in turn, received the award for Best Official Tourism Organization.
For Deputy Economy minister Pedro Siza Vieira, quoted in the communiqué, “it is a great pleasure to receive the ‘Oscars’ of Best European Destination for the third consecutive year.”
“In the last years, Portugal has assumed itself as a must-see and irresistible destination, and the fact that we have won this distinction in a row shows that our strategy is right, yields and is consistent,” he says.
Portugal was elected in 2018 as the Best Destination in the World for the second consecutive year.
